Paul Newman is Dead, But He Lives On in His Pasta Sauce

Saturday, September 27, 2008

Those blue eyes, that sly grin...Paul Newman passed away today at the age of 83. While I loved him as an actor, it was his humanitarian work that had a much broader impact on the world. He started Newman's Own in 1982 to market his own oil-and-vinegar salad dressing and, unlike some celebs, gave ALL the profits to charity. Last year the total donated to charity was more than $250 million. And the stuff he sold was way tasty! My fave pasta sauce and salad dressing.

It's harder to nominate my fave Paul Newman movie, though. Hud, The Sting, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof...and even What a Way to Go (in which he played a crazy Jackson Pollock–like artist named Larry Flint). Always so much going on inside his characters but he made it look effortless.

I am so sorry for his wife, Joanne Woodward, but I am even more sorry for the world. They don't make them like Paul Newman anymore.

Here's a scene from Cool Hand Luke when his character learns that his mom has died.

I know he will see Heaven.
